ART A “CURIOUS LOVE”

Dear Friends

The gallery is now in its 17th year and what a journey it has been for all involved. From acquiring rare and beautiful works of art, our treasure hunt spanning from the South to the North of England; meeting the most fascinating characters along the way. Some pieces, honestly, we now wish we had kept, but that is the story of art, somehow it always seems to find a new home and as is the case for those precious, long lost unknown masterpieces discovered abandoned in an attic or lost amongst a random auction lot, they can often get lost along the way.

Below is an extraordinary find by the gallery owner Mr Akins, a rare cornish coastal scene by the renowned, much-loved British artist Mary Jewels.

Mary Jewels 1886 – 1977
Born in Newlyn, Mary Jewels had no formal art training and was encouraged to paint by Cedric Morris. Her sister Cordelia was married to the sculptor Frank Dobson. Mary Jewels’ naive, or ‘natural’ style, as she called it, may have influenced the artist Christopher Wood who spent time in Newlyn in the 1920s.

From the start of our ‘CURIOUS LOVE’ – formerly a title of a show held at the gallery but now a term we have embraced as art dealers – our ethos has always been to make the world of fine art accessible to everyone. We operate an open-door policy where everyone is free to come along and enjoy the art on show. It’s true buying art is an expensive enterprise and it has to be if the artist aims to make it his/her sole career for art sales of originals by their nature are sporadic and unpredictable. But shouldn’t ‘we’ as a nation support the individuals, the ‘creatives’ who dare in hope they ultimately find success in doing the thing they were born to do.

Exciting Times! We have a whole host of shows planned for 2024 so keep posted, we would love you to join us!

On behalf of the resident artists at the Fletcher Gate and myself, we hope you have an AWESOME 2024!

Best Wishes
